Dormition of the Mother of God
Orthodox Monastery
Rives Junction, Michigan

In addition to the work of prayer, daily chores, and hospitality, the monastic community is engaged in work for the support of the monastery.  Some of these financially sustaining activities are described here.

Vestments

Sewing priests vestments, altar boy sticharia and altar cloths is one of the activities by which the nuns help support themselves. The materials are purchased locally or are imported from Greece or Damascus in Syria. All vestments are made to order. Material samples and measuring charts are available upon request.

Mounted Icons

Icons mounted on wood and granite are a large portion of the items sold in the monastery giftshop. They are made by the nuns in the woodworking shop of the monastery along with other items such as wooden nun and monk dolls, wooden simantrons, and decorated granite pieces.

Prayer Ropes

Prayer ropes are an integral part of the prayer of every monastic and many of the faithful, being used to count the number of times the “Jesus Prayer” is recited. The traditional prayer rope is made out of black wool. However, we also make prayer ropes out of smooth chord in various colors.

Iconography

Workshops: The monastery usually offers two iconography workshops each year, one in June and one in October.   Here students learn the ancient art of icon writing and participate in the liturgical cycle of the services for a full week.  For further information, see the Icon Workshops page.

Commissions: Commissions for small and large hand written icons are accepted upon request.

Then the LORD God took the man

and put him in the garden of Eden

to work and keep it.

+  + +  Gen 2:15  + + +

Whatever you do, do it heartily,

as to the Lord and not to men,

knowing that from the Lord

you will receive

the reward of the inheritance;

for you serve the Lord Christ.

+ + +  Col 3:23-4  + + +

He who works his land

will be filled with bread,

but those who pursue vain activities

lack understanding.

+ + +  Pv 12:11  + + +

If anyone will not work,

neither shall he eat.

For we hear that there are some

who walk among you

in a disorderly manner,

not working at all, but are busybodies.

Now those who are such

we command and exhort

through our Lord Jesus Christ

that they work in quietness

and eat their own bread.
