Holy Unction Holy Unction, the anointing with oil of those suffering in body or in soul, occurs within a beautiful service, and one which is not so frequently served in the parish life of this country. At the Monastery we strive to serve it monthly (except in December); the schedule is included on our Calendar. As a mystery of the Orthodox Church, the anointing with the Holy Oil is for those who have entered the Church through Holy Baptism and Chrismation and live a life accountable to the Church through regular participation in Confession, Holy Liturgy, and Communion. | |
"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.
Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.
And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." (James 5:13-16) |
